This certificate program is for practitioners who wish to augment their clinical skills and therapeutic toolkit. This training covers a variety of topics for use with children and families who present with a wide range of issues.
Examine rapport-building, engaging resistant children and parents, implementing an innovative assessment model, strengthening core family therapy skills, and utilizing play and expressive arts techniques. This program will combine theoretical material with hands-on therapeutic techniques. Learn how to implement new and innovative engagement, assessment, and treatment interventions with children and families.
This program comprises four webinars (outlined below). Each webinar may be taken separate from the certificate program as an individual webinar training.
Webinar 1 - What’s going on? An innovative model for assessing children and teens
The initial phase of therapy is perhaps the most important as it forms the foundation for successful ongoing work. Creating an atmosphere of safety in which the child feels accepted, understood, and respected is a crucial first step. Completion of a comprehensive assessment informs an appropriate treatment plan. This webinar will focus on that beginning phase of therapy. Specifically, how to build a positive therapeutic rapport, engage resistant clients, conduct a comprehensive assessment, and develop a treatment plan.
Webinar 2 - Wanna come out and play? The creative use of games, stories, puppets, and art with children and teens
The creative use of games, puppets, stories, and art engages children and teens in therapy. It helps them to resolve their psychological difficulties. This hands-on training will demonstrate a variety of therapeutic techniques to make sessions meaningful and effective.
Webinar 3 - Essential theory and practical skills for child-focused family therapy
Working with children in the context of their family has unique benefits in therapy sessions. This course will present the rationale for child-focused family sessions. It will outline the major models and essential skills of family therapy.
Webinar 4 - Creative techniques for child-focused family therapy
The use of creative techniques in child-focused family therapy sessions provides a medium for all members to participate. It promotes positive family interaction. This training will outline innovative techniques to engage, assess, and treat families. Participants will explore interventions to strengthen parenting skills.
Registration fees: $1,000 for full 4-day program. Each individual webinar $250. Student and group rates are available.
Continuing Education hours (CE): 24 for full certificate
SickKids CCMH Learning Institute has approval from the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) for participants of our programming to apply the number of CE hours earned in the program towards their continuing education hours. Full-day programs equal six CE hours; half-day programs equal three CE hours; for less than half-day programs, one hour of programming equals one CE hour.
Other licensing boards and professional organizations will grant continuing education credits for attendance at their own discretion; participants will need to submit the course outline and certificate for their consideration.
