Course Description

Building community capacity to be better in relation to a high urban Indigenous population. Understanding communal and colonial legacies that leave Indigenous or marginalized people overrepresented in systemic failure. Fostering better understandings of harm reduction. Breakout rooms to brainstorm short and long-term solutions. Actionable items to be discussed.

Facilitator Biography

Mkwa Giizhis (C.Hebert)

(They/Them She/Hers)

2-spirit water protector, artist, advocate living and working in Nogojiwanong community since 2006. Parent and auntie to many, boasted 'Home for Wayward Mystigenous Youth' outside the city. Survived lived experience of child welfare, homelessness, exploitation as well as addiction, disability and a neurodivergent. Survivor of domestic and gender-based violence who has become a home and business owner as well as a consistent fixture in Nogojiwanong community for more than several years. Bringing others on a cultural reclamation journey of ceremony and language since their time in child welfare. Their work is entrenched in grief and loss which has put them in a position to organize rallies, vigils and marches. Focusing on low-barrier access to ceremony, medicines and supporting people experiencing systemic failure as well as those who use drugs or engage in sex work from an Indigenous Harm Reduction approach.
