Ask the Experts: Dementia and Depression
This presentation will focus on two conditions which are common in the elderly: depression and dementia, specifically Alzheimer’s dementia. During the presentation, audience members will learn about depression and Alzheimer’s, their symptoms, and their risk factors. In addition, the presentation will focus on the link between depression and dementia, particularly in late life. Lastly, the presentation will include a brief discussion on the exciting research that is occurring at CAMH in the Geriatric Mental Health Research Department to focus on depression and dementia.
Our Presenter:
Dr. Heather Brooks (she/her) is a postdoctoral research fellow working in the Geriatric Mental Health Research Department at CAMH, supervised by Dr. Tarek Rajji. Dr. Brooks completed her PhD in 2021, with a focus on examining how brain activity relates to cognitive function in individuals with depression and mild cognitive impairment, two conditions which can increase the risk for Alzheimer’s dementia. As a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Brooks aims to conduct research on interventions which can be used to improve cognitive function and slow cognitive decline in older adults at high-risk for dementia.
