Free Event: Fierce + Sober: Queer Inclusiveness in Treatment

On June 16, 2022, one of Ottawa’s most fashionable drag icons come to Episode 2 of Fierce + Sober: Pride Edition!

“For a transgender patient, having to teach care providers about the importance of using the correct name and pronouns can be a very disheartening and invalidating experience. While we want to learn from our clients, it’s not their responsibility to teach us – especially when they’re already in crisis. That’s why work like this is so important, as it will allow us to identify and address the service gaps that exist for trans people seeking care,” said Dr. Juveria Zaheer, a Clinician Scientist with IMHPR and Medical Head of the Gerald Sheff and Shanitha Kachan Emergency Department at CAMH.

“I was in a dark place, and trying to be cool, and fit in within society,” says Kimmy Couture of her early stint with alcohol and her decisions at age 18 to quit drinking cold turkey. She talks to EHN Canada’s Jeremy Houston about both her sobriety journey and her experience as a trans queen – and she brings it to the runway in a ferocious performance.

We are joined by queer-focused social worker Aamir Subhan, who discusses challenges people within the LGBTQ+ community face when it comes to accessing support and treatment. He will speak to caring for the community as a whole, but more specifically, his experience working with trans and non-binary folks.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

✔️ Discuss the stigma associated with mental health and addictions within the LGBTQ+ community

✔️ Explore the current scope of both private and public LGBTQ+ mental health and addictions resources

✔️ Understand the importance of practitioners seeking out queer specific training to create a safe and inclusive treatment environment

This webinar provides 1.0 CEU credits recognized by the CACCF, CCPA, MDPAC, and CVRP.
