About the event:

What is chronic pain and in which cases would opioids be an appropriate option to treat it?



Dr. Furlan will address topics like:

  • Is chronic pain curable?
  • Can people live well with chronic pain?
  • Do opioids improve the quality of life of people with chronic pain?
  • Why are there so many doctors who refuse to prescribe opioids to a person who is suffering from chronic pain?
  • If an opioid is prescribed for pain, can it still be addictive?


Dr. Andrea Furlan is a physician and scientist at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, UHN. She was the leader of the 2010 Canadian Opioid Guidelines that provided recommendations for physicians prescribing opioids for chronic pain. She has published more than 100 scientific papers on the causes, treatments and barriers for treatments of people with chronic pain. She has a YouTube channel for people with chronic pain with more than 400,000 subscribers and more than 37 million views.
