Free Event for Patients and Families // Metabolic Health in Mental Illness: Why is this important, and what we can do about it?

About the event:

This talk will focus on the many ways metabolic health is important in the context of mental illness. The presenters will review evidence that shows how intertwined and bidirectional these relationships are and discuss how addressing this overlap can lead to improved quality of life and newer therapeutic strategies. New findings and initiatives at the Metabolic Clinic at CAMH to address this problem will also be discussed.

Dr. Mahavir Agarwal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and a Clinician-Scientist in the Schizophrenia Division at the Centre for Addiction at Mental Health (CAMH), Toronto. He is also the Medical Head for Clinical Research in the Schizophrenia Division. He co-leads the Metabolic Clinic and the Clozapine Clinic at CAMH.

Dr. Agarwal’s research interest lies in understanding the mechanisms underlying metabolic and cognitive dysfunction in severe mental illness and discovering new treatments for these abnormalities. His research program has been funded by generous support from several federal and provincial agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), PSI Foundation, and the University of Toronto.
