Wayne Skinner and Beatrice Traub-Werner on “Becoming Effective Therapists: A Conversation on why Motivational Interviewing Matters”

How would you know that you are an effective therapist? Is it because your clients return for more sessions? Is your practice full? How much is therapy about the method rather than about the therapist?
In this session of Many Hearts, we will present the argument that the empathic abilities of the therapist are the single, strongest predictor of positive therapeutic outcomes. And that Motivational Interviewing is the approach that teaches therapists the core skills on how to work empathically with a wide range of clients. Could the “how” of helping be more important than the “what” of treatment?
Objectives:
- To review the evidence for what is known about therapist effectiveness.
- To explore four factors, in Motivational Interviewing (MI), that enhance empathic connection
- To identify four MI skills that build clinical engagement and alliance
- To observe a role play in which MI spirit and skills are employed
- To debrief and discuss the uses of MI in clinical work
Wayne Skinner, MSW, RSW, has taught at Adler for over a decade, in courses on addiction, concurrent disorders, Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. He has held appointments as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Factor‐Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. From its founding in 1998 until retiring in 2016, Wayne played a leadership role at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), heading its Concurrent Disorders Program, and more recently leading the Problem Gambling Institute of Ontario and serving as Deputy Clinical Director for Addictions in the Ambulatory Care and Structured Treatment Programs. Prior to CAMH, he worked at the Addiction Research Foundation (ARF) as a clinician, clinical supervisor, program director, consultant, research investigator and educator. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and an active MI trainer. He has given presentations and workshops on a wide range of topics related to addictions, mental health and concurrent disorders, nationally and internationally. Wayne edited Treating Concurrent Disorders: A Guide for Counsellors (CAMH, 2005). In 2007, with Caroline O’Grady, he co‐authored A Family Guide to Concurrent Disorders. With Marilyn Herie, he co‐authored Substance Abuse in Canada (Oxford University Press, 2010). He authored, with Carolyn Cooper, Motivational Interviewing for Concurrent Disorders (Norton & Co,2013). In 2014, CAMH published Fundamentals of Addiction: a practical guide for counsellors, edited by Marilyn Herie and Wayne.
Beatrice Traub-Werner, MSW, RSW, has spent over 30 years in the field of social work as a clinician, administrator, and educator. She was the Director of Admissions at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. A visionary and entrepreneur, Beatrice founded TAPE Educational Services in affiliation with the Continuing Education Division at the University of St. Michael's College in the University of Toronto. Through TAPE, she developed continuing education programs and certificates for healthcare and human services workers, teaching both in-house and at agencies or organizations. In 2009, Beatrice partnered with the Mennonite New Life Centre and began the Bridge Training Program for Internationally Educated Mental Health Professionals, which continues to operate with a new leadership team under the name of BREM. In 2012, Beatrice joined the Adler team as Dean of Continuing Education where she creates, oversees, and teaches ConEd courses and programs. Over the years she has served on and chaired a number of boards of directors and from 2007 to 2017 she was an elected social work member of the Council of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and three years as its President. In 2021 she was re-elected for another three-year term. Beatrice is completing her second three-year term as an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Social Work Boards, based in Culpepper, VA.
Attendance Certificates
These sessions are free and open to everyone. If you require a psychotherapy certificate of attendance, you can request one after the session and there is a $20 CAD administrative fee. Attendance will be verified through zoom and you must attend the full 90 minutes to receive a certificate. *Note: this session does NOT qualify as continuing education for the International Coach Federation.*
