How would you know that you are an effective therapist? Is it because your clients return for more sessions? Is your practice full? How much is therapy about the method rather than about the therapist?

In this session of Many Hearts, we will present the argument that the empathic abilities of the therapist are the single, strongest predictor of positive therapeutic outcomes. And that Motivational Interviewing is the approach that teaches therapists the core skills on how to work empathically with a wide range of clients. Could the “how” of helping be more important than the “what” of treatment?

Objectives:

  • To review the evidence for what is known about therapist effectiveness.
  • To explore four factors, in Motivational Interviewing (MI), that enhance empathic connection
  • To identify four MI skills that build clinical engagement and alliance
  • To observe a role play in which MI spirit and skills are employed
  • To debrief and discuss the uses of MI in clinical work
