Healing the Wounds of Race Trauma: Examining Interventions for Professionals

Race trauma and systematic oppression can have a lasting impact on individuals and families that shapes their psychological and mental health, their family functioning, and their outcomes. Supporting children, youth, adults and families through the impact of this particular trauma may help to readjust other areas of their life where they experience difficulties. This course will guide learners on the basic principles of race trauma, how to assess and develop a treatment plan, and interventions which promote healing and transformation. The course will continue to build on the impact of colonialization, and white supremacy which reinforces racial trauma and helps learners to reshape their understanding of “good clinical intervention”. Learners will further develop tools to assess racial trauma and select interventions that are trauma-focused and culturally informed. This course further blends theories and clinical interventions to help support clients who access support in clinical and social work settings. This course is helpful for social workers who support racialized and Black families, children, youth and adults.
Learning Goals
1. Apply the theoretical principles of race trauma to assessment and intervention for children, youth and adults who may experience oppression.
2. Develop effective healing strategies to help people experiencing race trauma to improve their outcomes.
3. Enhance critical reflective skills in assessing the social worker’s role within the service user or community’s experience, and apply advocacy skills to develop systemic changes.
