Healthy Active Living During A Pandemic

Presented by: Dr. Michelle Ponti, Dr. Linda Plowright, Justin Temple and Evonne Sullivan

Screen Time  Presented by Dr. Michelle Ponti

The Canadian Pediatric Society is planning the release of an update to the 2017 position statement on screen time among young children, with added research on pandemic effects. The CPS has also published guidelines focused on school-aged children and adolescents, a group whose growing independence and increased time spent without parental supervision requires a distinct approach to managing digital devices. Studies show that despite widespread use of “social” media, children in this age group are showing signs of increased isolation. School-aged children and adolescents also have increased rates of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and suicide. The statement is expected to provide an overview of the risks and potential benefits of digital media, with recommendations to help clinicians counsel parents and patients.

Food for Thought: The Importance of Nutrition for Mental Health  Presented by Dr. Linda Plowright

Most of us are aware that what we eat is important for the health of our bodies and the prevention of disease; but we may not be aware that nutrition is intimately linked to mental health as well. In this talk, Dr. Plowright will explore the scientific evidence which demonstrates the important connections between our food choices and our mental health and will teach us how to eat for mental wellness and a healthy brain.

Recreation Therapy and Mental Health Presented by Justin Temple

This portion of the presentation will provide an understanding and connection regarding physical activity and mental health.  We will also explore the importance of a balanced recreation and leisure lifestyle and practical strategies to reduce the challenges or unstructured time for youth.

Yoga for Wellness & Recovery Presented by Evonne Sullivan

This informational session will provide an overview on yoga for mental health, along with its inclusion into treatment plans for various conditions and disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and addiction.

The benefits of trauma-informed yoga will be explored; discussing how it works, teaching practices, effects on the brain and nervous system, and its ability to support and offer improvements for mental health and trauma recovery.
