Description:
This training explores the background of how trauma impacts children and families and how best to work with these clients to identify myriad traumatic responses and encourage healing in the family system.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to recognize the effects of trauma in children and adolescents, understand the many manifestations of complex developmental trauma and how to incorporate this understanding into their work.

The facilitator will provide strategies to assist in the stabilization and support of youth with traumatic histories as well as steps in how to use relationship in order to promote healing in traumatized children. This training is family-focused and will include some time spent on parenting in the context of trauma.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the effects of trauma in children and adolescents
  • Understand the many manifestations of complex developmental trauma and how to incorporate this understanding into front-line work with children and families
  • Develop strategies to assist in the stabilization and support of youth with traumatic histories and will consider what the stages of trauma-focused treatment might look like
  • Understand the importance of relationship in the promotion of healing in traumatized children

Continuing Education (CE) information: 6 CE hours

SickKids CCMH Learning Institute has approval from the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) for participants of our programming to apply the number of CE hours earned in the program towards their continuing education hours.

Other licensing boards and professional organizations will grant continuing education credits for attendance at their own discretion; participants will need to submit the course outline and certificate for their consideration.
