Measurement-based care (MBC) involves the monitoring of client outcomes during a course of treatment. MBC has been shown to improve client outcomes and to increase capacity in an organization that provides mental health services. Government funders are also requiring organizations to provide more evidence that services are making a difference in the lives of children and youth with mental health challenges.

The implementation of MBC involves a number of steps including choice of outcome domains to be monitored, choice of outcome instruments to be used in monitoring, and shared decision-making with the client. Integration of MBC with an electronic health record can enhance the process considerably.

In this training session, we will guide participants into the process of implementation of MBC in a community setting using youth depression as an example of a clinical problem to be addressed. How to choose outcome domains and particular instruments will be covered as will the use of youth and parents with lived experience to support the process. The principles of shared decision-making using outcome information will be covered and tips on how to successfully implement MBC in a specific clinical setting will be shared. In addition, we will problem-solve participants' individual implementation projects around MBC as needed.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn the principles of measurement-based care and the evidence for its effectiveness
  • Learn how to choose outcome domains to use in an MBC framework
  • Learn how to choose which outcome instrument is best placed to ensure accurate and useful outcome monitoring
  • Learn how to implement MBC in a particular setting to maximize its uptake and utility

Registration fees: $80.
