Raschkowan Lecture Series: Gambling in the Digital Age, 2.0
Presenter: Dr. Debi Laplante
Talk Title: Internet Sports Betting: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Abstract
Rapid increases in the availability of legalized sports betting in the United States has led to renewed interest in this activity as a public health concern. Online opportunities for sports betting, in particular, have been the focus of attention due to the intersection of the novel legal gambling opportunity and the mode of accessing that opportunity. But, what do we know about how people gamble on sports or engage in closely related activities, such as daily fantasy sports? What do we know about detecting people who have problems with sports betting and how we can help them? This Raschkowan Lecture will consider early and contemporary evidence of actual internet sports gambling and daily fantasy sports. It will discuss the nature of the activity, how it has changed over time, and its problem gambling implications, including new research about markers of harm and voluntary self-exclusion. A thorough consideration of the limitations of available research will guide a discussion of future research that is needed to advance our understanding of sports betting.
