Managing Alcohol Use Problems Online Course

Course Overview

The use of alcohol is highly prevalent in Canada, and alcohol use problems are common in most clinical practices.  This course is designed for physicians and other front-line clinicians consists of five self-directed online modules that explore the impact of alcohol problems, ways to better identify problematic alcohol use, and treatments for alcohol use disorder using both medications and psychosocial treatment approaches.  This five-week course is designed to help enhance participants' knowledge and skills to more effectively engage and treat clients with alcohol use problems through various instructional activities, such as case scenarios, interactive review questions, individual activities and end-of-module quizzes.

• Module 1: Introduction to alcohol use problems
• Module 2: Screening, assessment and brief interventions
• Module 3: Withdrawal management
• Module 4: Pharmacotherapy for alcohol use problems
• Module 5: Psychosocial treatment approaches

Learning Objectives

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

• identify the short-term and long-term health impacts of alcohol use
• identify clinical signs and symptoms of problem drinking
• describe screening tools available to identify a person with alcohol use problems
• explain the components of a comprehensive assessment for alcohol use disorder
• describe how to access and treat alcohol withdrawal
• explain the medications prescribed for the treatment of alcohol use disorder
• describe commonly used psychosocial treatment approaches for alcohol use disorder

Course Requirements

To successfully meet the course requirements and receive a letter of completion, participants are expected to:

• complete the pre- and post course learning surveys
• allocate a minimum of two to three hours per module
• read all course content
• complete the quiz at the end of each module
• complete the course evaluation

Certification and Accreditation

The continuing education event has been designated as a U of T Accredited event and awarded with the following credits:

1. The College of Family Physicians of Canada - 12 Mainpro+ credits
2. Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada - 12 Section 1 hours
