#MHForAll webinar: What does the future look like for mental health financing?
zoom
When it comes to mental health, the historic neglect in funding is clear. Less than 2% of national health budgets globally are spent on mental health, and in low and middle-income countries this drops to less than 1%.
But did you know that for every US$ 1 invested into scaled up treatment for common mental disorders, there is a return of US$ 4 in improved health and productivity?
In our next #MHForAll webinar we’ll be exploring some of the upcoming trends and opportunities for mental health financing around the world. Will you join us?
Here are the presenters' key messages from the #MHForAll webinar: What does the future look like for mental health financing?
Evidence is key. In order to ensure adequate funding, mental health initiatives need to be grounded in evidence which demonstrate impact. When policy makers allocate money for mental health, this is what they look for.
Mental health must be integrated into other programmes. This means exploring the links between mental health and other conditions, such as HIV, and other sectors, such as employment.
It's not all about economics. When it comes to mental health financing we should also use human rights, public health and equity frameworks to make the case for investment.
COVID-19 provides a unique opportunity for mental health. Working hard to ensure mental health and psychosocial support are integrated into response plans will be critical to the future of financing.
This work cannot be done alone. We must ensure that we work closely with the government, and we work in equal partnership, to ensure the best possible outcome for all.
