Description:
This training will cover the four-process approach to the spirit of motivational interviewing (MI) including the principles, skills such as open-ended questions, affirmation, reflective listening and summarization, evocation and deepening the awareness of sustain/change talk in session, with emphasis on moving more towards change talk as the session progresses.
This training will include an educational review of key concepts from MI therapeutic approaches and following this, a practical interactive learning experience of these key concepts linking theory to practice will be reviewed. This MI training experience will focus on enhancing the applied skills regarding:
- 4 principles of MI
- Spirit of MI
- The basic skill of MI (OARS)
- Sustain talk vs. change talk
Learning objectives:
- Provide a theoretical overview of MI
- Providing a learning environment for practical applied integration of MI skill

Facilitator Bio:
Ian Robertson, MSW, RSW currently works as an organizational consultant for community-based organizations and hospital systems to establish high-quality "Standards of Care" and effective service delivery approaches. He is a clinical trainer in the areas of trauma, mental health and addiction best practices throughout the province for several hospitals and community-based programs.
Ian also provides consultation and clinical supervision to therapists who operate in private practice and public agency settings. Ian is an adjunct instructor at Wilfred Laurier University School of Social Work for the Trauma and Addiction Certificate programs. Ian worked for many years as the regional clinical supervisor for Addictions and Mental Health at the Niagara Health System. Ian has presented at several international and national conferences. Ian is certified as an advanced clinical supervisor from Smith College, School of Social Work in MA, USA and has a Master of Social Work from McMaster University. Ian also owns and operates a private practice in Niagara.
Continuing Education (CE) information: 12 CE hours
SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health Learning Institute is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) to offer continuing education (CE) hours. The number of eligible CE hours are outlined within each program. SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health Learning Institute maintains responsibility for the programs.
Other licensing boards and professional organizations will grant continuing education credits for attendance at their own discretion; participants will need to submit the course outline and Certificate of Participation for their consideration.
