Description:
This training will look at the impacts of toxic stress and trauma on the developing brain. It will address the impacts of early adversity and the long-term effects on physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual health and wellness. It will address the critical stages of neurodevelopment when trauma has the greatest impact. It will describe how the nervous system is impacted by toxic stress and trauma and what is required to recalibrate a hypervigilant nervous system, to facilitate healing. It will look at various factors that can help promote resilience and healing.

Learning objectives:

  • Understanding the different kinds of stress
  • Learning the current definition of “trauma” or toxic stress and what makes events “traumatic”
  • Learning how toxic stress can alter brain development, including brain architecture, as well as neurochemistry
  • Understanding how the nervous system may be impacted by various forms of trauma
  • Learning about how the brain can change and heal with neuroplasticity
  • Being able to identify various paths to recalibrating a hyperactive nervous system
  • Learning how to support healing in the wake of trauma and toxic stress

Facilitator Bio:
Dr. Jennifer Mervyn, MA, PhD
was honoured by The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) as one of the 150 Canadians making a difference in mental health. She received the Multicultural Award at Trinity Western University, where she has taught in the graduate department for 17 years. She is a registered psychologist actively seeking to de-colonize psychological and therapeutic practices while offering individual, family, and group counselling, and mental health treatment. She has an extensive background in trauma and substance abuse and utilizes innovative, culturally informed, therapeutic approaches in her work.

Jennifer is Métis, a mother of three, and a strong advocate for the indigenous community. She consults, teaches and trains on trauma-informed practice and policy nationwide.


Continuing Education (CE) information: 6 CE hours

SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health Learning Institute is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) to offer continuing education (CE) hours. The number of eligible CE hours are outlined within each program. SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health Learning Institute maintains responsibility for the programs.

Other licensing boards and professional organizations will grant continuing education credits for attendance at their own discretion; participants will need to submit the course outline and Certificate of Participation for their consideration.
