Description: Constraints like COVID-19 are often described in a negative way, such as something that limits us or prevents us from changing something or a situation. For many, COVID-19 has sparked  widespread panic, social isolation, increased anxiety, and a strong sense of hopelessness and despair about the future and the possibility of our ever returning back to the world as we knew it prior to the pandemic. However, once we as helping professionals can learn how to embrace uncertainty and accept that we are powerless to change COVID-19 we become liberated and can be more present and effective helpers with the young people we serve and help them to adopt a radical acceptance mindset. We should never underestimate how resourceful, resilient, and creative our clients have been in their own efforts to cope with and prevent themselves from falling prey to COVID-19.

In this "hands on" practice-oriented webinar, participants will learn how to interview for wellness and possibilities by eliciting and utilizing to the maximum degree youths' pretreatment changes, self-generated coping, problem-solving, and health-enhancing expertise to further empower them. Participants will learn a variety of stress-innoculation and resiliency-enhancing tools and strategies, such as: effective mindfulness-based practices, visualizations, Wise Mind thinking tools, and tapping into their inventiveness, key strengths, life passions, and creativity with art, expressive writing, and other avenues for self-expression to help reduce stress, stabilize anxiety and depressive symptoms, and prevent self-destructive behaviours. Effective ways to make tele-health family therapy sessions more upbeat and fun will also be discussed.

Learning objectives:

  • Viewing the constraints COVID-19 has posed as an opportunity for endless possibilities rather than a limitation
  • Learning how to embrace radical acceptance and non-attachment to liberate oneself and our clients from ruminating about what we don't have control over and negative emotions
  • Eliciting from youth their own self-generated coping, problem-solving, and health-enhancing abilities through the use of pretreatment change and empowering questions
  • Learn a wide range of stress-inoculation and resiliency-enhancing tools and strategies that make use of youths' key strengths, talents, and key avenues of self-expression
  • Learn a variety of mindfulness meditations and practices, visualizations, and Wise Mind thinking tools and strategies for youth to reduce stress and help them to better cope with strong negative emotions and thoughts
  • Gain ways to make tele-health family therapy sessions more upbeat and fun
