This 30-hour comprehensive and in-depth post-graduate level course and training on clinical supervision is designed for psychotherapists and psychologists who wish to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to assume the role of clinical supervisor for students enrolled in graduate counselling and psychotherapy programs, for candidates applying for registration with a regulatory body such as the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), and for registered psychotherapists who wish to continue their professional growth and development.

The course is framed within a Four-Dimensional (4D) Model of Clinical Supervision which comprises developmental, social role, competency, and process dimensions. The 4-D Model of Clinical Supervision, or part of it, can be used by a supervisor of any theoretical stripe. The supervisors would differ in terms of the Competency Dimension particularly as it relates to the application of concepts from a specific theory and the ensuing treatment which follows from that theory. The course and training offer the participant the tools needed to be an effective, confident, sensitive and competent supervisor.

The course is intended for psychotherapists meeting the requirements for independent practice who are engaged in the supervision of other psychotherapists in compliance with qualification requirements of CRPO for clinical supervisors.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To present current models of supervision and their goals, processes, techniques, ethics and relational issues.
  2. To understand that supervision is to be tailored to the development, theoretical orientation and personality characteristics of the supervisee.
  3. To acknowledge that effective and meaningful supervision entails the collaboration of the supervisor and supervisee.
  4. To become aware of in-session techniques to foster supervisee professional development, self-awareness, and ethical and professional behavior.
