Supporting Parents/Caregivers During a Pandemic: Information for Primary Care

The COVID-19 pandemic has not been easy on children, youth and families, many of whom are reporting increased stress, anxiety and depression during this time.   Learn more about pandemic mental health, and strategies to support parents/caregivers, children and youth during this unprecedented time.

These virtual Special Interest ECHO Sessions are in-depth educational opportunities on a specific child and/or youth mental health topic. These ECHO sessions run for 1 hour and include a de-identified case presentation from a participant within their own practice.

Presented by Dr. Michael Cheng, M.D., FRCPC, Psychiatrist Hub Specialist

Michael is a child psychiatrist who is passionate about the importance of healthy attachments to people and activities that give purpose, hope and meaning. He is the co-founder of eMentalHealth.ca, a website that seeks to support primary care providers in their work with patients with mental health needs. He is a mentor with the Collaborative Mental Health Network (CMHN) of the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP). Michael is married to a family physician, with whom they share two wonderful young children. During his spare time, Michael’s interests are sleep.

Pandemic Parenting/Caregiving, Part 1 : Supporting Parents/Caregivers During the Pandemic in Primary Care – Dr. Michael Cheng, M.D., FRCPC

Date: Wednesday, January 27th, 2021
Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. EST

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • List ways in which the pandemic has been stressful for children, youth and families;
  • Identify parents in distress;
  • Provide basic strategies to support parents (e.g. self-compassion, self-care) including referrals when necessary.

This virtual education session is offered at no cost to participants. Earn up to 1 certified Mainpro+® credit!

This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1 Mainpro+ credit.
The Project ECHO Ontario Child and Youth Mental Health – ECHO Sessions is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. EST

By the end of this session, participants will know how to:

  • “Pandemic parenting/caregiving” strategies such as developing deliberate, daily routines;
  • Emotional coaching (including empathy, validation and acceptance);
  • Self-regulation strategies for their children and youth.

This virtual education session is offered at no cost to participants. Earn up to 1 certified Mainpro+® credit!

Soutenir les parents/tuteurs pendant une pandémie : renseignements pour les soins primaires

La pandémie de la COVID-19 n’a pas été facile pour les enfants, les adolescents et les familles, et beaucoup d’entre eux signalent une augmentation du stress, de l’anxiété et de la dépression pendant cette période. Apprenez-en davantage sur la santé mentale en cas de pandémie et sur les stratégies de soutien aux parents, aux enfants et aux adolescents pendant cette période sans précédent.

Ces sessions d’intérêt spécial d’ECHO proposent des occasions de s’instruire sur un sujet particulier relatif à la santé mentale des enfants ou des adolescents. Elles durent une heure et incluent la présentation d’un cas anonymisé de la part d’un(e) participant(e) à partir de sa propre pratique.

Présentateur : Dr Michael Cheng, M.D., FRCPC,
Psychiatre, Spécialist du Hub

Le Dr Cheng qui est psychiatre pour enfants, accorde une grande importance à la qualité des liens d’attachement aux personnes et aux activités qui donnent une orientation, un sens à l’existence, et de l’espoir. C’est le cofondateur de eMentalHealth.ca, dont la mission est d’appuyer les prestataires de soins primaires dans leur travail auprès des patients ayant des problèmes de santé mentale. Il fait du mentorat dans le cadre du Collaborative Mental Health Network (CMHN) du Collège des médecins de famille de l’Ontatio (CMFO). Michael est marié à un médecin de famille et ils ont deux jeunes enfants. À ses moments de loisirs, Michael s’intéresse au sommeil.
