Transforming emotional injuries with emotion-focused therapy

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute as part of our Summer Sprints series

Live webinar: August 31, 2021 | Time: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST

Facilitator: Jeanne Watson, PhD, C.Psych

This training is suitable for:
Mental Health Professionals: psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers.

Client category: For professionals who work with adult clients.

Description: This webinar will introduce some fundamental principles underlying emotion-focused psychotherapy (EFT). The role of EFT in promoting clients’ emotional processing and affect regulation will be presented.

Participants will learn how to attune to clients’ emotional experience moment-to-moment in the session by attending to verbal and non-verbal information. This information is useful to guide clinicians in their choice of interventions and ways of working with clients’ painful experiences and emotional injuries. Specific interventions and ways of working with clients’ emotional pain will be reviewed and illustrated with case vignettes.

Markers related to attachment injuries will be identified in order to guide specific treatment interventions. Working with clients to resolve negative life experiences and develop positive ways of being with self and other is an essential to the healing process. The interventions will be demonstrated with videos of clients resolving specific types of painful experiences including unresolved grief and abandonment.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify emotional injuries and work with them using EFT interventions
  • Identify specific markers of client readiness to engage in interpersonal dialogues
  • Acquire strategies to intervene at specific markers
  • Describe the stages of transformation in empty chair dialogues and identify resolution
