Truth Not ‘Wreckonciliation’: Starting and Continuing a Path of Anti-colonial Learning and Action

September 19, 2022 @ 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. ET

Presented by: Jennifer (Jen) Poole

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Committee issued a searing report and 94 calls to action. Many of them were specific to social work. Since then, there has been much talk of and even a rush to ‘reconciliation’ in some settler social work spaces, but not as much truth, response and action. What was/is a call for deep change has become hollow, a kind of ‘wreckonciliation’ with many confused or complacent about how to start or continue a path of anti-colonial learning and action.

As a first generation white settler, Jen Poole was confused too, stuck in untruths, fear and the kind of compliance, conflict avoidance and competition that Jones & Okun call white supremacy culture. In this 2 hour webinar, Jen will talk about that culture and how it permeates social work practice and learning. We’ll talk about how it is connected to the truths of colonialism and what Dr. Kathy Absolon calls ‘waking from a colonial coma’. Then, Jen will talk about waking to a path of anti-colonial learning and action, and importantly, staying on that path for the rest of our lives, despite every-day challenges and temptations to ‘hit the snooze button’.

This Webinar is FREE for Ontario Registered Social Workers (RSW), Registered Social Service Workers (RSSW) and Students of Social Work and Social Service Work Programs. Please note: If you are not an RSW, RSSW or student of these programs in Ontario, you may still attend but will be charged a fee of $30.
