COVID-19 related content: As we collectively and individually experience a global pandemic, we each face a broad set of challenges that span across our professional and personal lives. The complexity and uncertainty of the situation is leading to an increase in individual distress and burnout, which naturally extends to the communities and systems of which we are part. Therefore, it is crucial at this time to explore knowledge and skillsets that can support each of us to effectively develop and maintain resiliency and well-being.

Description: Why mindfulness? Mindfulness training has been shown to increase our ability to focus, develop cognitive flexibility, creative thinking, all while combating burnout and reducing anxiety and stress.

In these sessions, we will explore what mindfulness is and how it can be applied within clinical settings to support the well-being of clinicians, patients and the broader health-care delivery system. We will also examine the evidence base behind the increasing implementation of mindfulness across key sectors of society, with a specific focus on its implementation within health-care settings. With the aim to build a practical toolkit of mindfulness activities, the sessions will combine a mixture of didactic lecture and hands-on experiential Applied Mindfulness practices/activities. Examples of how to apply and translate this knowledge into different settings (for clinicians and patients across a wide spectrum of ages) will be given.

The sessions will be interactive and integrate different types of learning approaches, with the aim to create an optimal environment for knowledge production and community connection.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of foundational working definitions of mindfulness
  • Develop a toolkit of mindfulness activities through the experience of Applied Mindfulness practices that can be integrated into both personal and professional settings
  • Examine the evidence base and connection between mindfulness and neuroscience
  • Explore the connection between mind and body from a biological perspective
  • Identify mindfulness concepts that can be applied to develop self-awareness and self-regulation
