Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute
Live webinar: September 10, 2021 | Time: 9 a.m. to noon EST
Facilitators: Jennifer Thomson, MACP, RP, CPT, NFS and Michelle Bridgman, MSc from Trans Atlantic Training – LGBTQ+ Training for individuals in the mental health industry
Our society is becoming increasingly accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, but with that comes some nuances of diversity and inclusion practices in advertising. During Pride Month we see most large companies advertising inclusion, waving Pride flags, and donating to LGBTQ+ causes – but how do we know these companies are truly inclusive?
In this webinar, we discuss performative allyship, what it means, and how it is harmful to the LGBTQ+ community. You will learn how to avoid performative allyship, be a true ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and create an open and inviting environment in your personal and business practices. You will learn: the five pillars of effective allyship; concrete ways you can alter your online and in-person presence to be more inclusive and inviting; dos and don’ts of allyship in business; and how to make a real difference for the LGBTQ+ community.
Learning objectives:
- Understand what performative allyship is and why it is detrimental to the LGBTQ+ community
- Learn how and where to continually educate yourself and your business to avoid performative allyship
- How to make your environment more inviting, accepting, and adaptive to the LGBTQ+ community using the 5 pillars of effective allyship
- How to alter your interactions with others to be more inviting and inclusive
