Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and the ambivalent adolescent: The effective use of DBT in clinical practice with adolescents

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Live webinar: November 4, 5, 11 and 12, 2021 | Time: 9 a.m. to noon EST

Facilitator: Robyn Lam, MA, RP, CCC

DBT is a well-researched approach to working with emotion-regulation issues. Although originally developed for adults, it has been adapted over the years to be used with adolescents, both individually and in skills groups. The practice of DBT with adolescents requires some necessary adjustments to take into consideration their developmental stage and needs.

This training is for professionals who would like to use DBT in working with adolescents on regulating emotions and managing distress. We will briefly cover the core skills and concepts of DBT for adolescents and focus primarily on how to utilize them to address ambivalence and encourage integration of DBT skills in the youth's daily life.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills are especially relevant now for adolescents struggling to manage their emotions while facing multiple changes to their routines and way of life, and additionally a loss of connection to their peers and community networks, given the limitations of the pandemic. This approach is a useful addition to any clinical work with adolescents who are feeling overwhelmed and needing support to help them stay safe through crises.

Learning objectives:

  • Summarize the core DBT principles and skills as applied to adolescents
  • Facilitate the psychoeducation of DBT principles and skills when working with adolescents
  • Facilitate turning DBT philosophy and skills into 'life practice' for adolescents
  • Use DBT principles and skills to address ambivalence that adolescents may show

Registration fees: $500. Student and group rates are available.
