Getting back on track: Practical techniques for supporting children, youth and families experiencing deteriorating mental health

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Live webinar October 18 and 25, 2021 | 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST

Facilitator: Katy Albert, MEd, OCT, BCBA

The COVID-19 Pandemic has left many children, youth and families struggling, overwhelmed and disconnected. Those with preexisting neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) seem to have been disproportionately affected. Clients and their families living with autism, ADHD and other preexisting psychiatric diagnoses, who have experienced deteriorating mental health, may require additional support and consideration as they step out from behind their screens and towards their goals IRL (in real life).

In this webinar, mental health professionals, educators and frontline workers will be given the foundation to apply behavioural principals, learning effective tools to help clients and their families reestablish expectations and daily routines, catch up on lost or lagging skills, and address interfering behaviours.

Actionable strategies for promoting flexibility, resilience, emotional regulation as well as for addressing anxiety and adjustment disorders, tantrums, aggression, and avoidance will be discussed.

COVID-19 related content:

  • Review research on the impact of the pandemic on children and youth with preexisting psychiatric and neurodevelopmental diagnoses
  • Provide tools for clinicians helping families who have experienced deteriorating mental health during the pandemic to get back on track through reestablishing expectations and daily routines, catching up on lost or lagging skills, and addressing interfering behaviours
  • Children with preexisting diagnosis such as ADHD and ASD have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. In this workshop these populations will be discussed specifically, helping participants to acquire practical strategies to engage and accommodate children with learning differences such ADHD and ASD during therapy sessions.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the mental health of different groups of children and youth
  • Acquire practical strategies to help clients use what they learn in therapy to improve their daily lives
  • Describe the differences between learning language-based rules and acquiring real life skills
  • Understand applications for functional behaviour assessment to address behaviours that interfere with positive outcomes
  • Be able to facilitate the use of external rewards in a way that is sustainable and supports the development of intrinsic motivation
  • Acquire practical strategies to engage and accommodate children with learning differences such as ADHD, LD and ASD during therapy sessions
