Webinar - Integrating dialectical behaviour therapy with family-based treatment for eating disorders

Integrating dialectical behaviour therapy with family-based treatment for eating disorders

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Live webinar series: November 22, 23, 29, and 30, 2021 | 9 a.m. to noon EST
Facilitator: Anita Federici, PhD, CPsych, FAED

Over the past two years, rates of adolescents presenting with EDs have risen sharply. The demand for specialized treatment is in high demand. Outpatient and inpatient settings are admitting an increasing number of patients with multi-diagnostic ED presentations (e.g., those with co-occurring suicide, self-injury, anxiety, depression, trauma, and/or substance use disorders). While family-based treatment (FBT) is considered a front-line treatment, up to 50% of patients fail to respond adequately. Families and researchers alike describe pervasive problems with emotional regulation (over versus under control) that interfere with FBT.

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) provides a comprehensive and multi-modal framework for managing emotion regulation difficulties and multiple high-risk behaviours in the context of an eating disorder. This practical, hands-on training will highlight the latest research and rationale for the use of DBT for adolescents with EDs and their families and will focus on how to integrate DBT with FBT. Specific attention will be given to the management of suicide and self-injury, navigating treatment interfering behaviours, how to transform existing ED programming, and how to increase commitment to treatment goals. This webinar will include large and small group discussion, role-play, and ready-to-use client handouts.

The content of the training will include adaptations made for virtual treatment as well as discussion about how the pandemic has impacted eating disorder and DBT care.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe the similarities and differences between DBT and FBT
  • Teach the biosocial theory (adapted for FBT) to clients and families
  • Organize sessions and ED programs based on the DBT target hierarchy
  • Increase commitment to treatment goals via dialectics and commitment strategies
  • Target behaviours that interfere with treatment delivery

Registration fee: $500. Student and group rates are available.
