Providing parent guidance in anxious times: An approach to helping parents raise resilient, emotionally healthy children

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Live webinar October 14 and 21, 2021 |  9:00 a.m. to noon  EST

Facilitated by renowned public speaker and author, Alex Russell, PhD, C.Psych

This webinar provides an approach to providing parent guidance that focuses on building emotional resiliency in children and improving the quality of parent-child interactions. A model is provided that allows professionals to help parents stay emotionally present in their children’s lives while respectfully giving them space to develop their own agendas and sense of responsibility. The webinar covers a range of challenges parents increasingly face, including managing screens and supporting children with anxiety issues such as school refusal. Participants will gain a health perspective on anxiety, in which childhood anxiety is understood as a necessary building block of adaptation and an essential gateway to a child’s creative engagement with the world.

The training will also address COVID-19, which  presents a unique challenge to parents in its collapsing together of private and public life. The loss of this division creates challenges in at least three areas of family life: control, privacy, and affect regulation. This workshop offers professionals a conceptual roadmap to help parents understand the nature of the challenge COVID has presented to families, and a method for problem-solving these challenges.

Learning objectives:

  • help parents stay emotionally present in their children’s lives while respectfully giving them space to develop their own agendas and sense of responsibility
  • help parents facilitate their children's emotional health, including helping them develop adaptive anxiety and resiliency
  • how to understand some of the common stressors in parent-child relationships and help parents develop healthier and happier modes of engagement
  • how to conceptualize the developmental challenges created by COVID-19, and strategies for helping parents meet these challenges
