Webinar: Supporting clients with mental health challenges

In this webinar, Maria Lo, Training Coordinator for Hong Fook Mental Health Association in Toronto will examine the following:

  • How does the migration process and resettlement experience of newcomers relate to and impact their mental and physical health?
  • Dealing with the migration resettlement process - strategies and resources for change and coping, using a “strength-based” and “wellness” approach.
  • How can we support clients in the above?
  • The influences of culture, cultural identity, stigma on refugee/immigrants’ mental health.
  • Conducting cultural assessments and developing a culturally competent care plan to support refugees/immigrants

About Maria Lo

Maria has over 28 years of experience working with immigrants from diverse cultural backgrounds. She has substantial knowledge on the myriads of obstacles, challenges and stresses derived from the migration process and how these impact on immigrants’ mental health, and ultimately on the overall health. Maria has worked with victims of family violence, isolated seniors and newcomer youths as well as possess over 15 years of experience in implementing, organizing and facilitating groups with diverse purposes, e.g. stress reduction groups for consumers, women’s support group, develop curriculum of the mental health training series as well as delivering trainings for the settlement sector etc. Maria obtained her bachelor degree in Social Sciences at University of Western Ontario and other certifications include Certified Nonviolent Crisis Intervention instructor, Mental Health First Aid, ASIST (applied suicide intervention skills training), Narrative Exposure Therapy, Defusing anger, Resistance and Hostility, and WRAP (wellness recovery action plan).

Maria has been the training coordinator with Hong Fook Mental Health Association since October 2008.
