Trans care for mental health practitioners: Introduction to working with transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming clients in a clinical setting

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Live webinar November 9 and 10, 2021 | Time: 9 a.m. to noon EST

Facilitators: Michelle Bridgman, MSc, and Jennifer Thomson, MACP, RP, CPT, NFS from Trans Atlantic Training

We are all becoming more aware that gender diversity is not limited to a binary definition of male and female. There is more and more fluidity around gender and yet, at the same time, there is more prejudice and fear. Do you feel comfortable and knowledgeable about working with transgender clients, or those who identify as non-binary, or gender non-conforming?

This training will combine theory and experiential learning. It will include some background to clinical thinking and how treatment in the 1960s evolved into current treatment pathways. We will help you become familiar with terminology, an understanding of what clients may be experiencing from the perspective of people who are assigned male or female at birth, but who do not identify with those assigned genders as well as individuals who have a non-binary or non-conforming gender identity. Most importantly, the aim is to illustrate how you can create safe(r) spaces that support and engage transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming clients.

The relationship between sex and gender is often confused and we will explore the differences as well as the interaction between sex and gender. In order to give you the space to feel safe in exploring these issues, we will provide case studies for you to work with in small groups or triads so that you leave feeling more confident in your ability to work with this demographic.

Learning objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of working with transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming clients
  • Understand the interaction between sexuality and gender
  • Feel comfortable with using the terminology
  • Develop an understanding of the experience your clients may be going through
  • Understand the ethical and legal guidelines for working with transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming clients

Registration fees: $250. Student and group rates are available
