Description: Anxiety is now the leading mental health disorder among children and youth. Despite a dramatic increase in available psychotherapeutic and medicinal interventions to treat anxiety issues, in fact, the incidence of mal-adaptive anxiety in childhood is growing steadily worse.  Adding to the problem, having begun to conceptualize anxiety as a psychopathology, both children and adult are increasingly less comfortable with it. We have turned anxiety into an illness and become afraid of it.

This webinar provides an approach to treating children with anxiety issues within this cultural context. It offers a health perspective on anxiety, in which childhood anxiety is understood as a necessary building block of adaptation and an essential gateway to a child’s creative engagement with the world. You will gain an understanding of what "anxiety" means, at the level of brain functioning, emotional experience and behaviour.

The webinar is intended to provide an approach to treating anxious children that cuts across therapeutic modalities, offering both a conceptual framework and a set of best practices for promoting adaptive anxiety in children and youth.

Learning objectives:

  • How to conceptualize current forms of anxiety problems in children from a health perspective, in which anxiety is seen as an essential and healthy human emotion
  • How to identify key features of current anxiety problems in children, and the factors that contribute to them
  • A method to help children and teenagers develop more adaptive forms of anxiety

Registration fees: $250. Student and group rates are available.
