COVID related content: Clinicians, support workers, and advocates have adapted the work in order to keep human services going during a pandemic that requires social distancing.  For many of us, this has meant bringing the traumatic content of the workplace directly into our homes. As we discuss vicarious trauma, the context of working in the pandemic for a year will be highlighted as a unique and significant contributing factor.

Description: Not feeling “yourself” at work or at home? Intrusive thoughts or challenging emotions? Finding it harder to practice self-care?  You may be affected by vicarious trauma, a common experience among clinicians, support workers, and advocates.

This half-day webinar will take an in-depth look at vicarious trauma, contributing factors, and strategies to reduce the impacts of traumatic exposure in the workplace, while promoting resilience. Practical information is further developed through discussion, self-reflection exercises, and group activities, using an intersectional lens.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the signs and contributing factors associated with vicarious trauma through an intersectional lens
  • Differentiate between vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout, while understanding how these phenomena are related
  • Explore workplace and personal resiliency-based strategies to address vicarious trauma and related experiences
  • Reflect on challenges to self-care
  • Learn about debriefing techniques that minimize impact on the listener
