COVID-19 related content: The program will include discussion on the implications of the pandemic on youth, their substance use, and the shift to virtual-based care and its impact on youth engagement.
Description: This webinar will educate participants on the unique factors that exist for youth who use substances in a problematic way. It will provide information on the impact of substance use on the growing brain development of youth and how risk-taking and impulsivity often create conditions for youth to struggle with problematic substance use. It will touch upon the relationship between mental health and substance use for youth, trauma, and its impact on clinical interventions. We will address the idea of pursuing health equity in the context of youth addictions and explore concepts such as cultural humility and cultural formulation in clinical work.
The webinar will directly engage participants to consider their roles in decreasing stigma in the work they do. It will include instruction on evidence-based interventions, such as the transtheoretical model, harm reduction and motivational interviewing. Participants will engage in self-reflection and live role plays; the training will provide live discussion opportunities for participants.
Learning objectives:
- Identify the differences between normal and problematic substance use in youth
- Understand the connection between mental health and substance use, as well as its impact on growing brain development
- Better understand the unique challenges, such as stigma and structural oppressions that exist for Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ2IS youth who use substances
- Acquire harm reduction strategies to engage youth who use substances more effectively
- Gain some case formulation and motivational interviewing strategies that will assist them in their clinical work with young people, particularly as they have therapeutic conversations about substance use
- Gain a more fulsome understanding of the stages of change (transtheoretical model) and its implications within a clinical context
