Course Description
This three-part interactive and engaging workshop series will provide information and practical skills to parents, teachers, and/or anyone in a position of supporting at-risk youth. Participants will gain an understanding of strength-based, trauma-informed, and youth-centered approaches with regards to youth substance use and the law. Additionally, the second session of this workshop series will contain a short presentation and Q&A with a Community Service Officer from the Peterborough Police.
Learning Objectives
- To learn how to assess if a youth may be at-risk of developing a dependence on drug use.
- To gain information on different substances and the risks associated with use.
- To gain an understanding of support and interventions for youth who are in active substance use.
- To discuss strategies and supports for helping prevent youth from becoming involved with the law.
- To learn about the Youth Criminal Justice Act and its purpose to help our youth.
- To gain an understanding of what it looks like once a youth has been arrested.
- To gain an understanding of when and how to approach youth.
- To gain skills that help us build a positive and caring connection with youth.
- To learn what your role can look like when supporting a youth.
Facilitator Biography
Storm Brown
Storm Brown began working with children, youth, and their families in 2015. Storm works with youth from a holistic, trauma-informed, and strength-based approach. Currently, Storm practices as a full-time Addictions Counsellor while continuing to progress her professional development. Storm is committed to working collaboratively within the community and is honoured to share her experience supporting youth.

Who should attend this workshop series?
This workshop series is designed for people who support youth such as parents, guardians, teachers, peers, counsellors, etc.
How many people can attend?
Registration for this workshop series has been capped at 35 participants.
What supports will be provided during the sessions?
This is an interactive workshop that will involve discussions and sharing on behalf of participants. When talking about concerns around alcohol, emotions may arise. Active listeners from the John Howard Society will be present for anyone who needs one-on-one support during a session, and lists of local and provincial resources will be provided.
How will confidentiality work for the sessions?
We will ask the group that all participant’s identities and stories be kept in the strictest confidence to provide a safe space for all. Additionally, you will have the option to keep your camera off and/or use a pseudonym if it would make you feel more comfortable participating in the sessions.
What is a level one core QoC workshop series?
This refers to a workshop series that is a part of QoC's core curriculum and is offered at a more basic level, though it can be beneficial to anyone regardless of their experience in the field.
Do I need to attend all of the sessions?
Ideally, you will be able to attend all of the sessions, but you must be able to attend at least two out of the three. Attendees will receive certificates of attendance for participating in a minimum of 2/3 sessions.
Will these sessions be recorded?
No. These sessions will not be recorded in order to maintain the privacy of participants. The session slides, however, will be sent out.
What is your refund policy?
We can offer refunds up to seven days before the first session. Eventbrite's fee is nonrefundable. After this period, we can accept substitutions. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
