Youth Suicide Prevention Peel is a collaborative committee of local service agencies committed to supporting and promoting child and youth suicide prevention in Peel.

Youth Suicide Prevention Peel invites you to learn more about suicide prevention, stigma reduction, and the intersection with diversity and inclusion. A panel of youth voices will be included!

Key Note speaker: Maria Liegghio.

Dr. Liegghio is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at York University, Toronto, Ontario. She will be sharing her work on the stigma of mental illness in child and youth mental health, with a focus on   suicide prevention. She will also discuss the experiences children, youth, and their caregivers have of mental health, crisis, and police  services, and the role stigma plays in accessing these services.

Topics Will Include:

The experience of mental health service users, the experience of Afro-Caribbean youth diagnosed with a mental illness, poverty, and the experiences of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Talking back to the stigma of mental illness. Anti-discriminatory, anti-racism practice: Working for diversity and inclusion. The importance and
significance of positioning youth formally within the system to
influence policy and service planning and delivery.
