Introduction to Problem Technology Use online course

This five-week course provides a basic overview and knowledge on important topics related to problem technology use with a focus on problem gaming and problem social media use. Topics will include general overviews, risks, assessments, treatment options, and current issues. In the final week, learners will attend a webinar where they will interact with a simulated patient directly based on case studies from the course.  

Learning objectives:

  • Explain what problem technology use is;
  • Describe the harms associated with technology use focusing on gaming and social media use;
  • Identify problem technology prevalence rates and trends;
  • Explain what gaming and social media is and how it relates to problem technology use;
  • Name the risk and protective factors associated with problem gaming and social media use;
  • Identify screening and assessment tools for problem gaming and social media use; and
  • Identify emerging treatment methods and planning strategies for problem gaming and social media use.

This course is accredited by the Canadian Problem Gambling Certification Board and the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation for 16 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Facilitator bio:

Peter Chen, HSC, Bed, is a Community Health and Education Specialist in the Gambling, Gaming and Technology Use program at CAMH.  For over 20 years, he was a counsellor with the Problem Gambling and Technology Use treatment service at CAMH, serving clients with gambling and gaming problems and their family members.  He introduced mindfulness to the Problem Gambling and Technology Use Treatment Service in 2010 and led Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention groups for clients for ten years.  His area of expertise is the integration of mindfulness meditation for behavioural addiction treatment.  Peter has also facilitated mindfulness workshops for addiction and mental health service providers.  Peter is the chair of the Canadian Problem Gambling Certification Board and was part of the initial working group that developed the criteria for their certification process.  Peter is also a published author in the area of Mindfulness and Problem Gambling treatment.
