Title: Demystifying the link between problem gambling, cryptocurrencies, and other financial assets

Date: Wednesday, June 15th, 2022

Start time: 12:00           End time: 13:00

Description: With the emergence of new asset classes like cryptocurrencies and new mobile financial tools, the opportunities to participate in the financial market has increased significantly.  However, one unintended consequence to this is the potential emergence of problematic gambling when using these assets.  This webinar will highlight new and emerging research on how financial assets (cryptocurrencies, options, stocks etc.) may be used to engage in problem gambling.  Preliminary practice recommendations present in the literature will be highlighted.  Audience members will have an opportunity to engage in a question and answer period.  This webinar is best suited to mental health and addictions service providers.

Learning objectives: By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Briefly describe cryptocurrencies and other basic financial assets.

2. Identify the factors that make cryptocurrencies and other financial assets likely to be used for problem gambling.

3. Describe current practice recommendations when working with clients who problematically gamble with cryptocurrencies and other financial assets.

Accreditation blurb: Applications for accreditation have been submitted to the Canadian Problem Gambling Certification Board and to the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation for 1.0  Continuing Education Unit(s).
