New Intermediate Course Offering: Cognitive and Behavioural Approaches for Problem Gambling Treatment – One (CB-1)

We are happy to announce a new course that will be offered called Cognitive and Behavioural Approaches for Problem Gambling Treatment – One (CB-1). The course will take place this fall from October 23rd – November 27th, 2023.

This five-week, online course will be facilitated by Rick Berman (MA, LPC, CGACII), and is intended for clinicians who wish to gain knowledge around cognitive and behavioural strategies that can be used to support individuals with problem gambling. A variety of online activities such as case studies and discussion posts will be used to engage learners with the course content and facilitate students in gaining knowledge and skills related to cognitive and behavioural treatments. The course consists of five modules that will take approximately 2-3 hours to complete each week.

This intermediate course will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge, behaviours, and skills in the following areas:

  1. Cognitive and behavioural strategies that can be used to support individuals with problem gambling;
  2. The identification and addressing of schemas that impact recovery;
  3. The challenging and reshaping of cognitive distortions related to gambling through cognitive restructuring techniques;
  4. The planning of how to track gambling and relevant behaviours with clients;
  5. The identification and development of a plan for addressing gambling triggers; and,
  6. The planning of how to interrupt gambling patterns with clients.

Applications for accreditation have been submitted to the Canadian Problem Gambling Certification Board and to the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation for 12 Continuing Education Units/Hours.

Cognitive Behavioural Approaches for Problem Gambling Treatment: Advanced (CB-2) will be offered in the winter of 2024 to all learners who have completed CB-1 and wish to apply what they have learned in live, virtual activities with standardized patient activities. In addition, CB-2 provides peer and facilitator feedback on the application of cognitive behavioural techniques.
