Podcasts and problem gambling: Conversations to support recovery

Date:   8/26/2021          Time: 12:00-13:00 ET

Location: Online, registration link.

Description: This webinar is a conversation with Brian Hatch, host of 'All-in: The Addicted Gambler's Podcast'. The conversation, with audience Q&A, will focus on what Brian has learned from hosting this highly successful podcast and having over two hundred conversations with a range of people with lived experience of problem gambling and gaming, as well as some of the leading clinicians and researchers in the field. What were some of the show's highlights and how does Brian see podcasts fitting into the wider recovery journey for individuals? We will also discuss some of the common misconceptions about individuals who are experiencing problem gambling and how we can continue to reduce feelings of shame and stigma for people we support in our communities.

Speaker: Brian Hatch threw away his dreams of being a stand-up comedian to spend his nights in casinos. After a 14-year battle with gambling and relapses, he decided to try another way - talking about his feelings. In January of 2015, he started the world’s first gambling addiction podcast. Since that time, the podcast has grown to 200 plus episodes of heartbreaking first-hand problem gambling stories; recovery meetings, interviews with problem gambling advocates, judges, clinicians, sportswriters, and those who study the addiction. Brian speaks from the heart about his own recovery and hopes it helps.

Learning Objectives:

1. Consider the value of podcasts as a resource for clients as part of their recovery journey.

2. Consider the value of podcasts as a resource for clinicians who wish to learn more about different lived experiences of problem gambling.

3. Explain some of the barriers to treatment and support experienced by those with problem gambling.
