Digital gambling payment systems: Considering the roles and impacts of cash, credit, payment systems and financial institutions for gambling and related harms

This webinar will consider the impact of how consumers pay for their gambling on outcomes, including gambling harms. Gambling is one of the few products and industries that has predominately been cash-based. However, increasing concern about health, safety, and the ability to track payments combined with increasing consumer and industry preference for digital payments has led to the development of digital payments systems. Regulators must consider the potential impact of digital payment systems on gambling including related harms. This webinar will discuss psychological theories and consumer research on cash vs. digital payments, the potential advantages and disadvantages of digital payment systems for gambling, and the potential role of financial institutions in preventing and responding to gambling harms.

Associate Professor Sally Gainsbury is the Director of the Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic and Leader of the Technology Addiction Team within the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney. Her research is focused on understanding gambling to develop prevention and harm-minimisation strategies and understanding the impact of technology on the development and prevention of gambling problems. Dr. Gainsbury has published over 110 peer-reviewed research papers, is the Editor of the Journal International Gambling Studies, and has been invited to provide expertise to inform harm reduction practices and policies for government, treatment providers, and industry groups internationally.
