Sometimes, it's easy to focus on a single issue instead of looking at the big picture. My first thought was on why he lost his job - for organizational or individual reasons. People can have a hard time reflecting on their own stuff and want to blame others for things that happen. These cases are complex, with complex underpinnings - could be trauma, relationships, biological factors, so many things. There's really no way of knowing until he in treatment. People do what works for them until it doesn't.
