Re: What are your professional goals for 2019?

I would like to know more about the status of loot-box games and how they might be regulated in the future. Additionally, I would love to come across research on cross-over patterns of addiction between substances, behaviours (eating disorders, fitness) and gambling. How at risk is the problem gambler to developing another addiction during gambling sobriety?

What are your professional goals for 2019?

Registered Member ·
Since 2018 is coming to a close in less than two weeks, let's discuss our 2019 professional goals. What gambling-, gaming- or technology use- related topics do you hope to learn more about in the new year? Personally, I would be interested in learning more about adolescent problem gambling. There is lack of research in this area, and high percentages of youth experiencing gambling problems, so I think this is an important area for more research and education. I would also be interested in...

Serious games, mental health apps, and gambling disorder

The title of a recently published article, A Serious Game to Improve Emotion Regulation in Treatment-Seeking Individuals With Gambling Disorder: A Usability Study , peaked my interest for a few reasons. First, being part of a group of folks who design and create learning opportunities for mental health and addictions clinicians, we have talked about integrating "serious games" (broadly defined as games with educational or informational aims, vs. purely entertainment) into our course design.

Behaviour change techniques used by family and friends of individuals with problem gambling

Registered Member ·
Friends and family of people with problem gambling may experience harms although they do not gamble (or do not gamble in harmful ways) themselves. Often times, they can play a role in helping the person gambling change their behaviour in ways that reduces the harms experienced by everyone. However, these behaviour change techniques (BCTs) are not widely understood. A team of researchers recently helped codify BCTs that family and friends used to both minimize harms for the families/friends...

Time spent gaming and psychiatric symptoms in childhood

Registered Member ·
Many parents of young children worry about how much time their kids play video games and if that may cause mental health problems later on. However, few longitudinal studies have been done to examine how playing games at a young age impacts psychiatric symptoms later in life. A Norwegian team of researchers looked into this and found the following in a sample of 791 children: More ADHD symptoms at age 8 predicted more gaming at age 10 Gaming did not predict any more psychiatric symptoms The...

Great clip! Thanks for sharing Tara Marie and great to see Dr. Turner speaking on this panel. Curious to see the data on how popular regulated SESB becomes in Ontario as this rule comes into force... I know in the UK single events betting deals are highly advertised during major events such as football matches and horse racing.

New panel interview on single-event sports betting!

Registered Member ·
Soon, on August 27, the federal government will make it legal to gamble on individual sporting events . The provinces and territories will be able to set rules for new online and physical-venue forms of single-event sports betting (SESB). With Canadians spending approximately $10 billion per year on SESB through illegal networks, plus additional billions via opportunities in offshore jurisdictions, the new legal changes provide opportunity to regulate and control SESB, and divert money from...

Great clip - I agree that Dr. Turner had some balanced views. Definitely think we'll see some increased advertising! I'm interested in the points made that legalized SESB will likely divert money into legal streams that have the potential to: 1) help people come into contact with responsible gambling (RG) platforms and 2) a portion of that diverted money can be used to fund treatment and education. I'm also curious how likely the first point is, given these types of bets might not be made in...
