CBC Kids News CBC has recently launched a website that has video and text stories geared towards kids. They include stories that recap Kanye West's visit tot he White House, and a turtle that has a wheelchair made from Lego. Thanks Tiffany! Interesting blog. Really hits home the need to: 1. Develop different communications for different needs/audiences (i.e. some featuring slot machines and others sports betting); and 2. The importance of involving the target audience in the design, testing and evaluation of the communication strategy in order to minimize potential unintended negative consequences.

Winning at random intervals has been proven to keep a player engaged long after they are even interested in the game, compared to winning each and every time time. Hi, my name is Andrew Karagianis. I'm a Social Service Worker/Gambling Addiction Case Worker at Good Shepherd Ministries in Toronto. I'm part of a 3-year Gambling Addiction Pilot Project, which is addressing problem gambling among adults who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. I first heard of this community of interest at a CAMH training course last week, and thought it would be a good idea to join, and see what I can learn from other people!

Hi Andrew, I am a public health nurse working on the gambling file in Ottawa. Do you know if any organizations supporting homeless individuals in Ottawa are aware of higher rate of gambling harm with homeless individuals? Hi Susan, I personally don't have any links to Ottawa, although I've noticed that there is another member of this Community of Interest who is involved in Good Shepherd's project, who might have an answer. Hi, My name is Flora Matheson. I am a scientist at the Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael’s Hospital and work in the area of gambling, poverty and homelessness. I have been working with Good Shepherd since 2014 on this issue. We’ve been finding that there is a lack of awareness in general among this population. We have been developing guides and information to create awareness. We also have a training module on poverty, gambling and homelessness that we are happy to deliver.

There was one interesting study recently of 120,000 Chinese school children aged 6-8 that showed an increase in short-sightedness during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's important to remember we don't know if this is because of increased screen time or less time spent outdoors in daylight (or both). The title of a recently published article, A Serious Game to Improve Emotion Regulation in Treatment-Seeking Individuals With Gambling Disorder: A Usability Study , peaked my interest for a few reasons. Hi Olive I can't find the original document but it is called Ontario's problem - gambling Strategy and it has been in existence since 1996. Since 1999, it has been funded by a formula of 2 percent of gross slot machine revenue from charity casinos and slots at racetracks. The Canadian Centre for Child Protection has two excellent resources for parents, caregivers and professionals who would like more information about keeping children and youth safe online. Protectkidsonline.ca has a range of information covering issues such as cyberbullying , exploitation , healthy relationships and online boundaries.
