I came across an interesting Masters Thesis from Eastern Illinois University on resilience and coping with respect to social media addiction. Although I did not read this in its entirety, the discussion section is worth reviewing. The author highlights the correlation between social media addiction and avoidant coping skills. There are so many horrible things and misinformation on the internet regarding mental health and addictions. In a sea of confusion, it's hard to find the truth. I think it's critical for those of us working in this field to stop using jargon and psychobabble to reach the general population. Hi Elaine; I have a 21 year old son with ADHD since he was young, and am interested in how you did full detox on gaming, if you would be able to share this ? I am fully prepared to believe the gaming may have made the ADHD worse, so do you think the lack of symptoms could be directly related now ? My son is thinking he does not have a problem, how did you diagnose and treat your son ? Thank you.

I'm happy to share my experience, Suzie. It's a long story (I actually wrote a book about it). I did see my son exhibit ADHD symptoms during his worst crisis period with video gaming addiction and we can talk about that. How about we speak over the phone rather than on this forum. Thanks for sharing this interesting article, Steve! This study showed that as problem gambling severity increased (in adults), so did in-game spending on loot boxes. These findings lead to even more questions, including the effects on youth with and without gambling problems, the role of loot boxes in introducing youth to gambling, and the impact that evidence-based legislation can have on preventing or limiting in-game loot boxes. What do others think?

Interesting question Beth, I wish I could ask questions all day and someday see the answers to them. On this particular topic, I would have several questions, one of them being: How does one hour of screen time a day impact children 0-2 later on in childhood? I know the recommendation is that there should be no screen time until they are 2 years old, but I find as a mom of a 1.5 year old that the recommendation is just not feasible. I do try and limit screen time, but I am always curious...

I recently had a discussion with my father about the effects of social media and online immersion. We attempted to discuss whether or not this truly was a turning point in human history; a medium which will alter the human condition forever. I felt hesitant to oblige to such a strong prediction. Aaron, I think you're right in that nothing is ever purely positive or negative. Interestingly, a lot of the discussion around social media use come from a place of privilege. This is incredible information, Colleen! The impact that gaming can have on implicit learning is quite astonishing. It's interesting to read how research has shown the prevalence of IGD has changed little over 15 years despite huge leaps in technological advancement. I know that one recommendation to improve research on prevalence is to develop consistent and sound methodological measurement. A starting point may be our own 2015 CAMH Monitor Report .

Thank you for sharing! I am happy to see this research being done. My son, in full blown crisis with video gaming addiction was diagnosed with ADHD. He was 19 years old at the time. He had been tested when he was younger and no signs of ADHD were found. Within six months of full detox of gaming, two and a half years later, the ADHD symptoms were gone, as well as his facial tics. We definitely need to see more studies and results moving forward.

Great article, Howie. And thanks for shedding light on your personal experiences, Elaine. It's interesting because most of the theories I've heard concerning the link between ADHD and digital media use focus on how the symptoms of ADHD (e.g., inattentiveness, impulsivity, etc.) put a person at risk for developing problematic technology use as an unhealthy way of coping with/expressing these symptoms. However, in your son's case, it appears that his video gaming preceded his ADHD symptoms.

Such an interesting topic, and the article had this to say: "But maybe the most interesting finding is that not all screen activities had equal effects. For example: Playing video games with family had no significant association with the development of ADHD symptoms, while playing video games alone (even if playing with other people online) had a strong association with subsequent ADHD symptoms".

Interesting that the team managment must have been seeing a negative impact on the players from their tech use. I am so curious as to what was happening that brought them to this place. Wouldn't that be a great study? The impact of video gaming on professional athletes? I wonder though, if this will merely force their playing to be covert? Also, they have restrictions on their movements ie curfews so I wonder if they are being offered alternatives on how to use their down time while in hotel...

I was not aware of this either and share your concerns. We know generally that increased access places people at greater risk so making it easier to buy lottery tickets could have some impact. This is one of those examples where OLG would argue that they are simply improving their customer service by giving people more options. Their challenge is to balance their desire to promote their products to the broader community without increasing harm to those experiencing problems.
