This story was in the CBC yesterday: https://www.cbc.ca/news/health...g-disorder-1.4746637 In it, CAMH's Dr. Nigel Turner raises the point that its important to proceed with caution when labeling people when the research is still in quite early days. Thoughts?

Assessing gaming disorder: Expert opinions

Registered Member ·
Gaming disorder can be difficult to assess, as there are concerns about over pathologizing normal or potentially healthy behaviours. A new study surveyed 29 international experts until consensus was reached about useful criteria for assessing gaming disorder. This study helps clinicians with creating their own assessments to ensure they're looking at the most relevant features in their assessment to target as well as ensure they're not problematizing less relevant features. An interesting...

Mindfulness and problem gambling treatment.

Registered Member ·
A few years ago, problem gambling clinicians in Ontario began introducing mindfulness groups to clients as they felt that they could benefit from cultivating greater awareness of their thoughts and emotions while detaching from and not giving in to them. This practise is particularly relevant to people with gambling problems who tend to hold incorrect or erroneous beliefs about the nature of random chance (Toneatto et al., 1997; Turner, 2006) and engage in automatic thinking before, during...

Mindfulness-based relapse prevention for problem gambling manual

In Ontario, treatment for people with gambling problems was first implemented in 1995, in response to the opening of the province’s first commercial casino in Windsor. With extensive clinical experience and excellent research since then, knowledge about what constitutes effective treatment has been growing, but no one approach suits everyone. Treatment services have instead tended to adopt an eclectic and holistic approach, incorporating a biopsychosocial-spiritual model that draws on...

I wrote a couple of papers on the topic. I've posted below the reference to the most comprehensive. its a few years out of date, but has a wealth of information of different films and their content. The paper is probably due for an update. Turner, N.E., Fritz, B., Zangeneh, M., (2007). Images Of Gambling In Film. Journal of Gambling Issues . 20 ,117-144.

The Inventory of Gambling Situations (IGS) for working with clients with gambling problems.

Registered Member ·
The IGS is an excellent tool that counsellors can use when working with someone with a gambling problem. Here are some of the benefits of using it: It’s a well validated assessment tool. It is based on the idea that excessive gambling is a result of learned behaviour and therefore can be changed Provides insight into client’s specific gambling pattern and the situations that are most likely to lead to problem gambling behaviour Although developed from a CBT perspective, the IGS can be used...

Great clip! Thanks for sharing Tara Marie and great to see Dr. Turner speaking on this panel. Curious to see the data on how popular regulated SESB becomes in Ontario as this rule comes into force... I know in the UK single events betting deals are highly advertised during major events such as football matches and horse racing.

New panel interview on single-event sports betting!

Registered Member ·
Soon, on August 27, the federal government will make it legal to gamble on individual sporting events . The provinces and territories will be able to set rules for new online and physical-venue forms of single-event sports betting (SESB). With Canadians spending approximately $10 billion per year on SESB through illegal networks, plus additional billions via opportunities in offshore jurisdictions, the new legal changes provide opportunity to regulate and control SESB, and divert money from...

Great clip - I agree that Dr. Turner had some balanced views. Definitely think we'll see some increased advertising! I'm interested in the points made that legalized SESB will likely divert money into legal streams that have the potential to: 1) help people come into contact with responsible gambling (RG) platforms and 2) a portion of that diverted money can be used to fund treatment and education. I'm also curious how likely the first point is, given these types of bets might not be made in...

And that's why they don't report losses. Its just not appealing. Not that they should have to, but stop feeding into the myths about the actual chances of winning. I know that Dr Nigel Turner from CAMH recently did a series of media interviews on gambling and did mention his research on Knowledge of random events and chance in people with gambling problems. https://www.tandfonline.com/do...4459795.2021.2014930 But we are dealing with the gaming industry which is a big fish in the pond.
