The debate over just how much screen time is OK for young children rages on. Now the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued its latest guidelines : no screen time for babies under 1 and no more than 1 hour a day for kids 1-4 years old. Interesting question Beth, I wish I could ask questions all day and someday see the answers to them. On this particular topic, I would have several questions, one of them being: How does one hour of screen time a day impact children 0-2 later on in childhood? I know the recommendation is that there should be no screen time until they are 2 years old, but I find as a mom of a 1.5 year old that the recommendation is just not feasible. I do try and limit screen time, but I am always curious...

I am shaking my head over this one. As gambling is defined as “risking money or something of value on the outcome of an event involving chance when the probability of winning or losing is less than certain”. I would consider this ‘gambling’. Would this fall under the pervue of OLG or AGCO for follow-up? Interesting this article (referenced in the first article) speaks to the game being rigged. If it is proven to be rigged, I wonder about the fall-out, if any, for the gaming industry?

Thanks for sharing the article about the lawsuit @Registered Member. It will be interesting to see whether the game has some element of skill, and whether the advertisements about it were truthful. I agree with both @Registered Member and @Registered Member that this is a form of unregulated gambling. I find it interesting how forms of gambling evolve over time and how they are now popping up outside of casinos.

Thank you for organizing another great forum, Colleen. I appreciated being able to both attend and speak on a guest panel. I thoroughly enjoyed Dr DiClemente's talk and had a take-away or two from each of the breakout sessions I attended. A brilliant idea to end with Diana Tikasz's presentation on Refilling the Well. It serves as a great reminder that self-care is vital. It was great to make new friends and contacts. And the Marriott Hotel did an exceptional job as hosts of the event.

The title of a recently published article, A Serious Game to Improve Emotion Regulation in Treatment-Seeking Individuals With Gambling Disorder: A Usability Study , peaked my interest for a few reasons. Hi Olive I can't find the original document but it is called Ontario's problem - gambling Strategy and it has been in existence since 1996. Since 1999, it has been funded by a formula of 2 percent of gross slot machine revenue from charity casinos and slots at racetracks. Childhood Experiences and Problematic Smartphone Use: Potential public health implications?
A recent study by Forster et al. (2021) looked at the impact of adverse childhood experiences (i.e. witnessing domestic violence, parent alcohol and drug use, etc) on problematic smartphone use later on in life. Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) are negative experiences (such as abuse, neglect, dysfunctional household dynamics, and parental substance abuse, etc) during childhood that have been associated with different types of physical and mental conditions in adulthood. This intersects well with the work of Dr Gabor Mate who talks about the connection between trauma and addiction. Many addiction programs teach their clients about emotional regulation who greatly benefit from it. We would ask all clients coming into the problem gambling and technology use program at CAMH about any history of trauma.

Thank you Peter for your insight. Dr. Gabor Mate's explanation of trauma and addiction definitely helps to shed light on the impacts of early childhood traumatic experiences and addiction. Also its nice to see that this work on trauma is being translated into the clinical practice setting.

I think esports is a very interesting topic and I have followed it fairly closely since 2010 when I first watched an event. Even though competitive gaming events can pull in an audience of similar size to large sporting events it still seems to be a very "niche" thing and is rarely discussed outside of its own circle. Currently, a teen/young adult dedicating their life to competitive gaming seems to be more negatively viewed than a child dedicating themselves to traditional sport. I wonder...
