Great question @Registered Member. I wonder as gaming and smart phone use get more recognition, there will be more references in pop culture, which will in turn bring more awareness to the issues. Just this month in GQ magazine, there was an article on cutting back on smart phone use that included several practical strategies including turning your phone to grey scale. Apparently seeing apps/pictures/games etc in grey scale is less appealing and people were found to reduce their phone screen...

Thanks Sylvia! Yes, I look forward to speaking on the topic of meaningful activities during the webinar that I will be facilitating in March! I should also mention that the vocational supports discussed in the blog I wrote focus on treatment for clients with problem gambling, but many of these strategies can also be applied to clients with other types of problematic behaviours, such as problem technology use.

I am located in a rural county of Ontario with no access to transportation and a high rate of low income families who struggle to have access to sport available in our community, having said that you would think that problematic video game use would be more of an issue for the youth in our rural areas.

I like your idea Tiffany of adding safer gaming practices into curriculum with safer gambling information. I also think that there is a need for a paired curriculum for parents/guardians on both of these topics, especially as technology use is so ubiquitious. I wonder how influential overall wellness and mental health education would be at addressing some of those underlying issues and how students would respond if the curriculum not only taught safer gambling and gaming practices, but...

Fascinating! It does make sense, especially if we consider it in the context of other harmful usage (alcohol, drugs, sex, food). I like your extension, Beth, into how we will see it spread into popular culture - as plot lines in our favourite sitcoms and dramas? Serious games, mental health apps, and gambling disorder
The title of a recently published article, A Serious Game to Improve Emotion Regulation in Treatment-Seeking Individuals With Gambling Disorder: A Usability Study , peaked my interest for a few reasons. First, being part of a group of folks who design and create learning opportunities for mental health and addictions clinicians, we have talked about integrating "serious games" (broadly defined as games with educational or informational aims, vs. purely entertainment) into our course design.

How is the funding level determined in your jurisdiction or program for the gaming or gambling program? This can include interventions anywhere in the continuum of care, i.e. prevention, protection, harm minimization, treatment, or other? One source located is a collection of USA state expenditures. Hi Olive Here in Ontario, Canada, a certain amount of annual gambling revenues is directed towards gambling research, prevention, and treatment. I believe this was based on an agreement that accompanied the opening of casinos in the Province in the 1990s. The money is directed through our Ministry of Health. I think it was 2% of slot machine revenues from the slots at racetracks program. In my view, we were well funded as a result of that original decision and it worked well for many years,...
