At this point I think we’ve all heard of the impacts of smartphone use on mental health. Different strategies have been suggested as ways to reduce the negative impacts of smartphone use. One of the popular way people have tried to reduce their smartphone use is through “digital detoxing”. Digital detoxing has been loosely defined as spending time away from electronic devices such as smartphone to help promote wellbeing.

But does it actually work?

A recent article by Radtke et al (2022) tried to explore this question. The authors conducted a systemic review (as no systemic reviews exist on the topic currently) about the effectiveness of digital detoxing on improving health and well-being.

What did they find?

  • The results of the studies they looked at were diverse
  • Most of them showed no effect or had mixed findings
  • Three studies that looked at depressive symptoms found a reduction in symptomology

The authors point to the different ways in which digital detox interventions were conducted in each study, different measurements and differing times of measurement in each study as the reason why they observed these results.

If you want to read more about these findings and other interesting results you can read the full article here!
