Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use Community of Interest

The Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use Community of Interest brings together addiction and mental health service providers, researchers and subject matter experts in the fields of gambling, technology/Internet use and video gaming to collaborate and share knowledge on emerging trends and clinical best practices.

On May 9th and 10th, the Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use team under the Provincial System Support Program at CAMH and Gambling Research Exchange Ontario co-hosted the Gambling and Gaming Harms: Ontario Professional Development Forum. The forum brought together over 100 clinicians and community partners, providing an opportunity to interact and learn from each other’s experiences, broadening their outlook beyond their own practice.

Dr. Carlo C. DiClemente, one of the founders of the Stages of Change Model, opened the forum with an inspiring and relevant presentation on how the model can be applied when working with people with problem gambling and/or gaming.

Attendees then had the opportunity to participate in either a clinical or community stream to continue exploring relevant topics. The clinical stream included sessions on Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment; Working across Sectors to Improve Access to Gambling Treatment for Diverse Populations; and Adult Attachment and Addictions: Gambling, Gaming and Technology Use. The community stream explored topics such as Behavioural Addictions, Understanding Gambling Harms in Context, and Developing Evidence-Based Strategies to Reduce Gambling Harm.

There were also two exciting panels made up of clinicians, researchers, community and person with lived experience. Panelists talked about tackling the issues of concurrent disorders as well as working with youth.

The forum ended with a timely presentation by Diana Tikasz on Refilling the Well – How to Stay Healthy and Compassionate while Doing Challenging Work. She reminded us that in order to continue to do this work, we have to take care of ourselves.

Beyond sharing public health and clinical knowledge on the topic, this forum was a way to increase awareness of gambling and gaming harms, and offer practical advice on how to apply the evidence in both clinic and community settings across Ontario.

If you attended the forum, what were some of the highlights for you?

Thank you for organizing another great forum, Colleen. I appreciated being able to both attend and speak on a guest panel. I thoroughly enjoyed Dr DiClemente's talk and had a take-away or two from each of the breakout sessions I attended. A brilliant idea to end with Diana Tikasz's presentation on Refilling the Well. It serves as a great reminder that self-care is vital. It was great to make new friends and contacts. And the Marriott Hotel did an exceptional job as hosts of the event.

@Alison Benedict and @Elaine Uskoski - I enjoyed both the Current Trends in Youth Gambling, Gaming, Technology Use and Cannabis panel as well as the Working Across Sectors to Improve Access to Gambling Treatment for Diverse Populations breakout session. I honestly learned so much from both of your talks and want to thank you for sharing your personal experience with us.

Another part of the forum that I enjoyed was meeting everyone at our booth during the first day. It is always nice to hear about clinical and community initiatives across Ontario, and connect with the people who are working at the front lines supporting people with problem gambling, gaming and technology use.
