Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use Community of Interest

The Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use Community of Interest brings together addiction and mental health service providers, researchers and subject matter experts in the fields of gambling, technology/Internet use and video gaming to collaborate and share knowledge on emerging trends and clinical best practices.

The IGS is an excellent tool that counsellors can use when working with someone with a gambling problem. Here are some of the benefits of using it:

  • It’s a well validated assessment tool.
  • It is based on the idea that excessive gambling is a result of learned behaviour and therefore can be changed
  • Provides insight into client’s specific gambling pattern and the situations that are most likely to lead to problem gambling behaviour
  • Although developed from a CBT perspective, the IGS can be used in conjunction with a variety of treatment approaches such as MI, Mindfulness, 12-step model, psychodynamic, etc.
  • Can be used in both individual and group counselling programs
  • By identifying and ranking a client’s most problematic gambling triggers, the IGS can help to:
    • Recognize previous situations where the client had problems
    • Anticipate future situations where the client may be at risk
    • Develop an individualized plan for treatment and aftercare
    • Develop strategies for coping when at risk
