Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use Community of Interest

The Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use Community of Interest brings together addiction and mental health service providers, researchers and subject matter experts in the fields of gambling, technology/Internet use and video gaming to collaborate and share knowledge on emerging trends and clinical best practices.

Australia’s National Research Organization for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) recently published a qualitative study entitled, “The relationship between gambling and intimate partner violence against women” (2020).  Addressing a gap in the problem gambling literature, this report expands the definition of intimate partner violence (IPV) beyond physical assault, to include aspects of coercive control and economic abuse. Some of the key findings include:

  • Gambling does not directly or solely cause IPV, but can intersect with it in a range of ways
  • Economic abuse (control and exploitation) is highly prevalent among women experiencing gambling-related IPV
  • Gambling venues serve as safe spaces for women experiencing IPV who have few alternatives (i.e., highly accessible, open late at night, free food, childcare facilities, social connections with staff), however frequenting these spaces also increases the risk of developing a gambling problem, or experiencing financial losses that can result in further violence from partner
